When the House and Senate education committees unanimously agreed upon per-pupil funding for the next two school years, it was merely a recommendation, which is something lawmakers don’t generally vote on.
After months of negotiations, and nearly a year after the original deadline, Republican lawmakers finally put forth and passed a budget this week. North Carolina had not passed a state budget since 2023, causing strain for public institutions, especially public schools, in the interim.
